Best Time to Visit Southern Laos

During these months you enjoy:

  • Comfortable temperatures (especially pleasant on the Bolaven Plateau)
  • Dry roads and reliable conditions for waterfalls, coffee farms and temple visits
  • Coffee harvest season on the Bolaven Plateau (perfect for seed-to-cup tastings)
  • Clearer skies and good conditions for photography

Excellent year-round for cooler air. Waterfalls are most impressive from June to November. Coffee harvest peaks November–February.
Vat Phou & Champasak
Best in the cool dry season. The Vat Phou Festival usually takes place in February.
4000 Islands (Si Phan Don)
Dry season (Nov–March) is ideal for cycling and island exploration. Later in the green season, Khone Phapheng is at its most powerful.

Practical Travel Tips

Currency & Money

The official currency is the Lao Kip (LAK). US dollars and Thai Baht are widely accepted in Pakse for larger expenses (hotels, tours).

  • Withdraw Kip from ATMs (BCEL is reliable).
  • Carry small notes for markets, village stops and small purchases.
  • Most private tours with Watphou Travels can be paid in USD.

Tipping

Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated.

  • Driver: 20,000–50,000 LAK per day (or more for excellent service)
  • Guide (if added): 50,000–100,000 LAK per day
  • Restaurants: rounding up or 5–10% is fine

Health & Safety

  • Drink only bottled water.
  • Mosquito repellent is recommended (especially June–October).
  • Pakse has basic medical facilities. For serious issues, many travellers go to Ubon Ratchathani (Thailand).
  • Southern Laos is generally safe. Standard travel precautions apply.

Getting Around

All our tours are 100% private with your own vehicle and driver. This is the most comfortable and flexible way to explore the region.

  • Airport transfers and border transfers (Ubon, Cambodia border) are easily arranged.
  • On the 4000 Islands, short boat transfers are included in the relevant itineraries.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Dress modestly when visiting temples (shoulders and knees covered).
  • Remove shoes before entering temples and some homes.
  • A gentle nop (palms together) is the traditional greeting.

What to Pack

  • Light, breathable clothing for Pakse and the lowlands
  • A light jacket or fleece for the Bolaven Plateau (evenings can be cool)
  • Comfortable walking shoes (and a second pair for waterfalls)
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Small backpack for day tours
  • Universal power adapter
  • Modest clothing or a light scarf for temple visits

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only offer private tours?

Yes. All our tours are 100% private. You have your own vehicle and driver. No shared groups.

Can I customise the itinerary?

Absolutely. Our published tours are starting points. We regularly adapt them according to your pace, interests (coffee, photography, temples, trekking, family, etc.) and dates.

Is an English- or French-speaking guide included?

The standard package includes a professional driver. A qualified English- or French-speaking guide can be added on request.

What is the best time to visit the Bolaven Plateau?

November to February is ideal (coffee harvest + comfortable weather). June to October is excellent if you want to see the waterfalls at their fullest.

How far in advance should I book?

For private tours we recommend booking at least a few days in advance, especially in high season (November–February). Last-minute requests are often possible.

Do you organise airport or border transfers?

Yes. We can arrange private transfers from Pakse Airport, Ubon Ratchathani (Thailand), or the Cambodia border.

Are meals included?

Most day tours do not include lunch (you stop at local restaurants). Multi-day tours usually include breakfast and some meals — details are clearly indicated on each tour page. We can always adjust.

Is the Bolaven Plateau suitable for families or older travellers?

Yes. The classic waterfall and coffee tours are very accessible. For more active trekking options (Dan Sinxai, Dan Yai), we will advise according to your group.

What is your cancellation policy?

Contact us on WhatsApp and we will explain the conditions clearly before you confirm.
