Vat Phou (Wat Phu) is a Khmer temple complex at the foot of Phou Kao mountain, with origins older than Angkor Wat. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and lies near the small riverside town of Champasak, about an hour south of Pakse.
A private Vat Phou and Champasak tour from Pakse climbs the ancient stairway to the hillside sanctuary for views over the Mekong plain, then continues to Champasak town, rice fields and riverside villages. You can add a cycling route or a ferry to Don Daeng island.
